JULY 23, 2010
Kim Sheldon began the meeting with a welcome to everyone, including our new District Governor. Russ Parris led the invocation and Charles Howard led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Announcements
Kim Sheldon wished a happy birthday to our members who have made it through another year.
Kim told club members that there will be a "hands-on" service opportunity October 9, 2010 working with Habitat for Humanity.
Rotary Minute
Gordon Paulus was scheduled to share a Rotary Minute, but Kim skipped passed this part of our program. What's up with that? Someone volunteers to share a Rotary Minute and is not called on to do so? Gordon isn't taking the snub personally and will get extra air-time at the August 6th meeting.
Sunshine
Mr. Sunshine was Kenny Morgan, who welcomed visiting Rotarians and guests. Judy Waldo introduced her guest Mike Waldo. Is it just me, or does it seem Mike visits us quite often? Kenny asked the ex-altar boys and Catholic school graduates to please stand. As a recovering Catholic, Kenny told the Father Cunningham and the Confessional joke, which is always good for laughs. For members who have never heard it, it goes like this:
Little Kenny is in the confessional and confesses to "making out" with a Catholic girl. Father asks who the girl is and Little Kenny, not one to kiss and tell, will not reveal her name.
Father Cunningham asks "Was it Tina?" and Kenny replied he could not tell. "Was it Teresa?" Father asked. Again, Kenny said he could not tell. This went on for some time as Father asked if it was Kathy, Sharon, Fran, etc. "I cannot tell" said Kenny. After receiving a punishment of not being able to serve as an altar boy for four months, Little Kenny left the confessional. He ran into Little Mickey who asked what happened. Little Kenny replied "Father Cunningham gave me four months and a list of good leads!"
It must be noted here that Mike Paris has lost 16 pounds in two weeks! Mike is concerned about how long this will go on and when members will no longer recognize him. It is a particularly tough diet for Mike since he packages the food after our meetings to take to the Waterfront Mission.
Program
Sylvia is a member of the Tallahassee Rotary Club and gave an impassioned presentation regarding issues facing our Rotary district as well as Rotary clubs around the world. They include: Supporting Rotary International and E.R.A.Y (Every Rotarian Every Year), increasing membership, and raising the $200 million pledged to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for receipt of a matching grant to eradicate polio.
Sylvia announced that she's looking into starting a new “Internet Club” for members who cannot attend a set-date meeting, or who cannot afford the dues associated with a club affiliation. She also wants every club to attain a "Presidents Citation" for increasing membership, and would like to see an increase in the number of members who become Paul Harris Fellows.
She ended her presentation by highly recommending members attend the annual convention which will be held in New Orleans from May 21st through May 25th, 2011.
Kim presented Sylvia with a $1,000 check to payable to the Rotary Foundation, which represents 50% of PNR's annual goal for the 2010 - 2011 year.
The Rotary Pot was $364, and Charlie Cook won the draw but didn't pick the winning card.
Will Clause led us in the Four Way Test.
"Hands On" with Habitat for Humanity - October 9, 2010. Bring hammers, saws, strong backs and plenty of food and drink. Gary Barnes is coordinating this event; please see him for more details.
There is always a need for volunteers to provide help to citizens of the county, state and international community.
Do you know our club has a website? Visit it at www.pensacolanorth.org.
Finally, a thought about life from Joseph Joubert. "Life without duty is soft and boneless; it cannot hold itself together."
